A Brief Overview of the NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is Australia’s national approach to supporting people with permanent and significant disability. It provides funding directly to participants to purchase the supports and services they need to achieve their personal goals, foster independence, and participate fully in the community. TASCare Services is a registered provider committed to ensuring every participant in NSW gets the most out of their plan.

What Is the NDIS?

The NDIS is more than just funding; it’s a fundamental shift toward a person-centred system. It replaces previous government block funding with individualised packages designed around the participant’s unique needs and aspirations. The scheme aims to give people with disability genuine choice and control over their lives, ensuring they receive the necessary reasonable and necessary supports to live ordinary lives. Eligibility is based on age (7-65), residency, and the permanence/significance of the

How the NDIS Works

The scheme works in three main steps: Eligibility, Planning, and Implementation.

  1. Eligibility: You first apply to the NDIA to become a participant, proving you meet the criteria regarding age, residency, and disability impact.

  2. Planning: Once approved, you meet with a Planner (LAC or NDIA) to discuss your goals, current supports, and future needs. This results in an individualised NDIS Plan with funded support categories.

  3. Implementation: You choose how to manage your plan (Agency, Plan, or Self-Managed) and select NDIS Registered Providers like TASCare Services to deliver your funded supports, working toward your goals.

Principles and Objectives of the NDIS

The NDIS is guided by a strong philosophy focused on empowerment and inclusion. Here are the core objectives that drive the scheme

Choice and Control

Choice and Control

The primary goal is to empower participants to make decisions about their supports, who provides them, and when they are delivered, ensuring the services align with their preferences and personal goals.

Social and Economic Participation

Social and Economic Participation

The NDIS aims to provide the supports necessary for participants to engage fully in society—in their community, at work, and in social activities—leading to greater inclusion and independence.

Reasonable and Necessary

Reasonable and Necessary

Funding is provided for supports that are related to the participant’s disability, offer value for money, and are considered reasonable and necessary to achieve their goals, without being covered by other government systems.
